This fall has been exceptionally dry with pleasant warm weather until November 18 when we received 10 inches of wet heavy snow. Two memorable events from summer come to mind. Itasca celebrated 125 years with a birthday celebration July 30 & 31, which included creating an Itasca birthday song and a day of retro picnic activities. On a less fun note, just a few days prior to the birthday celebration, strong straight line winds took many trees down. We lost several at the resort and numerous more just east of the resort. Itasca’s Douglas Lodge area and East Entrance were severely impacted with many large pines destroyed. Early in the summer Dave started the restoration of a Caterpillar backhoe purchased at a fire sale. The cab was completely destroyed along with some engine components. Little did we know we would be needing it to excavate downed tree stumps from the storm; and were able to do so just before the snow came! New at the resort was a new storage box for the pool tarp and what a challenge moving it into the pool area. Thanks again to all our guests for making it another memorable year.

The news this season is Itasca State Park is celebrating 125 years, their quasquicentennial. Itasca Park is featuring a hike-a-month on the North Country Trail, a Centennial Wagon Train Reunion as well as other special programs and a Birthday Celebration the weekend of July 31, 2016. You can check the event schedule at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/itasca/calendar.html The winter has brought mild weather and alittle more snow than last year. Wild turkeys have appeared for the first time at our bird feeders and also a gray fox. Cabin updates include new flooring in Cabin #8 and new carpeting in Cabin #9. We hope the weather brings a warm spring, which has been uncommon in the past, and a pleasant summer and fall so everyone can enjoy Itasca State Park’s special events.
December – 12/11/2015
Now that the snow has arrived, it is time to reflect on last summer. May brought needed rain and followed with pleasant summer weather even into the fall. The rain made for beautiful spring and summer flowers and the summer was filled with awesome red sunsets due to smoke from forest fires in the West and North. The pleasant weather gave guests the chance to enjoy the improved bike trail, the new fishing pier at Lake Ozawindib and relaxing time at the pool. An unusual event was a hail storm lasting over half an hour damaging vehicles at the resort and pruning our trees. Though there was little roof damage, we did decide to reshingle five cabins this fall. Thank you to our guests for another memorable year and hope to see you next year.
Winter – 2/5/2015
This winter at Bert’s has been a bit unusual; cold snowy November, mild December and barely a dusting of snow for Christmas and a pleasantly warm January with little snow. Our updates for 2015, include air conditioning in all the cabins, new floors in Cabin# 10 and Cabin# 7 and a new deck on Cabin#12. The news at Itasca State Park is the resurfaced and rerouted bike trail from the Headwaters to Douglas Lodge is completed and was dedicated September 2014. Animal sightings are few though we have seen many tracks including deer, wolf, skunk, fox, weasel and muskrat. In addition to the to the usual bird sightings we have seen juncos, redpolls, crossbills and pine siskins and are happy to report our gray jays are back . We are hoping for a wet spring as it is extremely dry, and a warm summer for all to enjoy.
Bert’s Cabin’s 75th Anniversary – 8/1/2014
It was an especially memorable summer for us as we thank this years’ guests for helping us celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Bert’s Cabins; and we want to thank our past guests also who contributed to making the 75th Anniversary possible. We are grateful to think we have been a part of this 75 year tradition and hope that in the future the tradition will continue with guests making memories at Bert’s Cabins.
